My First Cable Project

Orange-colored Sky

This is the beginning of my first cable project and I have named it Orange-colored Sky Blanket. I think I am doing it right, though the pattern is not visible yet. But if you look closely at the image above, in the upper-left hand corner you will see a picture from the pattern I obtained. This orange is so deep that in lessened light it appears red. I can’t wait till it’s done.

Yesterday while working on it, I came across an incorrectly placed purl stitch that I was able to change to a correct knit stitch on the next row. I even dropped a knit stitch two rows down and I was able to fix that as well. That’s big stuff!

I am also making progress on Puff the Magic Dragon Afghan, having reached the two-thirds mark, though I will probably need to buy one more skein of Caron One Pound (Iris) to finish it.

Today, I am heading over to the Wednesday Morning Knitters because I have some questions on the Talking Tina Slouch Beanie that I am dying to finish.

I have been thinking of creating a separate site for my knitting creations, as Off da Hook is not applicable to knitting. Currently, I have my knitting files on my computer in a folder called Needle Naughtiness. Until I have some extra money to pay for domain registration until 2014, it’s just an idea.

Talking Tina Mobius Cowl

Talking Tina Mobius Cowl

Cast On: March 15, 2012
Cast Off: March 27, 2012
Pattern: Giselle Striped Cowl by Susan Mills
Needle: 9
Yarn: Patons Lace (Porcelain)
Dimensions: 10 x 58 inches

So my long lost cousin and I were reunited during her recent hospital stay and she asked if I could make her a scarf. She loved this yarn and I loved the pattern despite my error, which resulted in a mobius cowl.

I am also going to make her a hat from a pattern we both found. However, today while reviewing the pattern, I noticed that it requires seaming, of which I am not a fan, especially when a hat can be worked in the round. So I am searching for patterns again and will hopefully be able to start by tomorrow.

Yarn B: Ultra (White)
Needle: US 8

Well, I think I got two color knitting down. After M is for Mojo, I decided to see if I could begin the fashioning of a dog sweater. The collar is as far as I got yesterday.

I decided to create a complimentary piece to M is for Mojo, so I designed a bone twice as wide as M is for Mojo, after putting it against Mojo’s neck. Because color knitting is not very attractive on the wrong side, my first thought was to knit a third piece which would be equal in size to pieces 1 and 2, and then sew it back to back. In the end, piece 3 was not really necessary, as the wrong side would have been on the inside.

Anyway, it looks cute enough on Mojo and i think it will make a nice collar if I ever get adventurous enough to attach a sweater to it.

Off da Hook: February 13, 2012
Pattern: ODH Original
Yarn: Unknown (Red)
Hook: H

KTia929 made a pair of knitted wristlets and I was so impressed by the simplicity of the design that I decided to crochet some. The first one I made yesterday was a little loose, so today I restarted and they came out much bettah!

PATTERN

  1. Chain 30
  2. Rows 1-20: Sc in back loops.
  3. Seam 11 sts to the center from each side

This marks my completion of my Pay It Forward obligations.

The Playa Vista Yarn Crafters is gearing up to create another afghan for the Coffee Connection to raffle off and to spark awareness that they serve as our meeting location. The first pattern I chose turned out to be double knitting, which would have been great because the square would have be reversible. As such, after three attempts at learning double-knitting, I decided to practice single knitting with two colors. The result is the square above.

There is one glaring mistake: the white yarn heading to the right, off the left leg. Aside from that, my tension is a bit off, but that could be fixed with more practice. I think I am going to save this square and see if I can build a sweater around it for Mojo.

Holly Golightly Shawl

Holly Golightly Shawl

Holly Golightly Shawl

On da Hook: December 13, 2012
Off da Hook: February 11, 2012
Pattern: Interweave Crochet Midsummer Night’s Shawl by Lisa Naskrent
Thread: Unknown (Red)
Hook: G
Dimensions: 60 x 30 inches
Price: USD $36.00

I was a big fan of this shawl until I got to row 8 of the border, which states “work 7 to 8 dc in each ch5-sp taking care that work rem flat, ending with a multiple of 17 dc…” I was lucky enough to end up with a multiple of 17 by working 7 dc in each ch5-sp, but when both times I attempted to work from pattern, I ended up with extra stitches. Besides, I was not happy with the misalignment of the border with the second pattern set. Oh, and one more thing, I was not sure I was going to have enough thread to complete the shawl. Just wanting to end this project, I made up my own border, which I still like.

As to the thread, I purchased it at Newton’s Yarn Country parking lot sale. One person insists it’s rayon, but it could also be mercerized cotton. Either way, there is a sheen to the thread that I find very attractive.

The Painted Desert Scarf

The Painted Desert Scarf

Cast On: January 25, 2012
Bind Off: February 5, 2012
Pattern: Chunky Mochi Fan Stitch Scarf
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver (Painted Desert)
Needle: US 6
Dimensions: 13 x 67 inches

I just finished this scarf. I found the pattern courtesy Eirytdog, a member of the Playa Vista Yarn Crafters. She had a problem with the beginning tips because she was using Lion Brand Homespun…at least I think that was the problem.

When I started this, I started with US 8 needles, but it was 13 inches wide. I only wanted 12 inches wide. I tried using a US 10 needle, but I was too short or too long. My final choice was US 6, which left me with 13 inches wide. It was only supposed to be 64 inches long. When I got the halfway point, finishing one skein, it was 32 inches long, so I did not measure until the end and…well, you know the rest.

The pattern was very easy and I memorized it quickly. Still I had one point where my right side and wrong side got reversed, but I was able to fix it. I also learned that slip a stitch, by default means purl-wise, but I liked the theory that if the row is knit, slip knit-wise; and if the row is purl, slip purl-wise.

The Playa Vista Yarn Crafters (PVYC) was founded by HookerLeo in September 2010 and with the generous support of the Playa Vista Library, began meeting once a month in their Community Room. As membership grew, a decision was made to change to a weekly schedule and again, with generous support from the Vineyard Christian Fellowship, began meeting all other Thursdays of each month in the Gallery Room. They continue to meet every Thursday evening in the Gallery Room of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship from 6:00- 9:00 pm, with the exception of the third Thursday of each month when they meet at the Playa Vista Library from 5:00-8:00 pm.

Project Linus is a non-profit organization with a two-fold mission:

  1. Their mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”
  2. Their mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

Playa Vista Yarn Crafters Yarn Swap

Our inauguaral Playa Vista Yarn Crafters Yarn Sway was organized by member sarahbea and I think it was a success. I certainly had a good time, until I stepped in it, possible hurting another members feelings. Apology was sent the same night when I returned home; I’ve yet to hear if my apology was accepted or it it was even my fault. Anyway, because it rained on Chinese New Year Day, I did not go to Chinatown for any chow fun, so I used yesterday to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Gong hei fat choi e’erybody!
